Thursday, 27th December 2007 (3419 views) The central bank of Malta has issued a new gold coin to commemorate the military grandmaster Jean de la Valette.Boasting the Emblem of Malta and the year of issue on its obverse, the coin will also show the dates of La Valette's birth and death on the reverse (1494 to 1568), reports Di-ve.com. The coin is being released as part of the Europa Programme 2007 with its theme entitled European Realisation. Consequently the Europa Star, the official logo of the scheme, will also be shown on the reverse. Meanwhile, the coin will be the final Maltese lira to be produced before Malta joins the euro zone on January 1st 2008. It has been designed by the Maltese artist Noel Galea Bason and was minted at the Royal Dutch Mint. Jean Parisot de la Valette is widely regarded as a hero of the Knight of St John order after commanding the resistance against the Ottomans at the Great Siege of Malta in 1565.
