The heaviest, most highly-valued gold coin in the world is manufactured by the Royal Canadian Mint, which has sold five units so far, according to the Toronto Star.

According to the newspaper, the mint currently produces some of the purest gold in the world. It mainly crafts coins for collectors – including a new 2008 coin offering to commemorate the Chinese Year of the Rat and a one-ounce gold maple leaf coin -- as well as Olympic medals and service awards for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

"Here we concentrate on quality," tour guide Veronique told a Toronto Star reporter, adding that the mint produces around 8,000 pieces every day.

Among the items produced is the world's highest-valued gold coin – weighing 100 kilograms and measuring around the same size as an extra-large pizza.

It has a C$1 million (£510,389) face value, although its actual worth is more than double that given the current price of gold, according to Reuters.

The mint is located on Sussex Drive in Ottawa, Ontario, where the residences of Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper and the country's governor-general are also situated.
