South African mining firm Pamodzi Gold has achieved a record one million shifts without fatality at its East Rand operation.

The company took over the management of the mine in December 2006 from Canadian firm Bema Gold, the Times of South Africa reports.

It implemented a safety management programme and teamwork training for its 4,000 employees, the company said, to improve mine safety and performance.

Pamodzi Gold’s chief operations officer, Tony Murdoch Eaton, said: "We have made significant strides in safety performance since taking over the East Rand operation and this milestone is testimony to that."

The company's East Rand mine, located about 25 miles east of Johannesburg, consists of three underground operations - Grootvlei, which includes a processing plant, Cons Modder and Nigel. They are expected to produce around 160,000 ounces of gold a year over the next three years.

Overall, Pamodzi Gold aims to produce a million ounces of gold a year by 2009.
