Computer shoppers in Japan who are looking for a luxury item with a difference can buy a new line of bejewelled PC cases in solid gold and platinum, according to technology blog Pink Tentacle.

The cases, which are made by Tokyo-based company Zeus Computers, come in two varieties. There is the solid gold Mars model, which is priced at 60 million yen (£282,000) or the platinum Jupiter case.

Both feature inset diamonds arranged in the constellations of the Milky Way.

The high performance machines come with three gigahertz Intel processors, a 1,000-gigabyte hard drive and a disc drive capable of playing both Blu-ray and High Definition DVDs.

According to figures from JR Tokai Express Research on opinion poll site What Japan Thinks, 96.4 per cent of Japanese citizens own a home computer.
