Tuesday, 26th February 2008 (3018 views) Gold coins from Russia and Mexico were among the top-selling items at a recent auction held at the New York International Numismatic Convention in New York City, according to reports.Numismaster says the coins, dating from 1756 and 1790 respectively, were joined in the top three sales by a coin from Ecuador. The auction was organised by Ponterio and Associates. The Russian coin, a ten rouble piece dating from the reign of Empress Elizabeth, fetched $60,000 (£30,405). Meanwhile, the Mexican coin, a gold two escudos piece from 1790 sold for $28,000. A four escudos coin from Ecuador, which dated from 1841, achieve a final price of $26,000. Ahead of the main auction, Ponterio and Associates sold off a collection of ancient coins, including aureus denominations from the Roman Empire. A mint condition aureus coin dating from the reign of third century Empress Auguta sold for $14,000. Total proceeds from the auction were over $2.63 million.
