A man who posed as a woman's husband to steal her gold ornaments has been caught by police in the Indian region of Worli.

According to Express India, authorities arrested the 36-year-old male after he pretended to borrow some jewellery from his wife but failed to return and could not be contacted.

Kiran Dabhavdekar had told his wife that his mother was ill and asked to borrow 10,000 rupees (£126.28) for her treatment, which he received.

He then said his ailing parent wanted to give his wife some jewellery as a present, so asked to borrow certain items to get an idea of her style, said Police sub-inspector BC Gosavi.

Items worth 79,000 rupees were taken and Mr Dabhavdekar's phone was then unreachable, prompting his wife to inform the authorities.

He was charged with cheating under a section of the Indian Penal Code. The section is number 420 and this has gone on to become a slang term in some groups for a conman.
