Coins from a display at the SPS Museum in Lal Mandi, Kashmir, have mysteriously disappeared, it has emerged.

Some eight gold coins are believed to have been stolen, as well as 76 silver items, Greater Kashmir reports.

The "rare" coins have never been found and a report by government officials verified that only 54 of the 62 gold discs in the museum are currently in the collection.

Each of the eight coins is thought to have been left with the officials responsible for maintaining the register, which monitors their presence in the museum.

But it does not say what happened to them after this point, leading Greater Kashmir to suggest some ideas and claim that the storage of such items is "unscientific and insecure".

"The collection of rare coins has not been catalogued so far, thus making the collection prone to theft by the officials and burglars," it added.

According to Kashmir Wallpaper, the SPS Museum houses artifacts and items such as Buddha statues, ancient weapons and brass statues.
