A 14ct white gold ring is the winning piece in a recent design competition, Diamond Intelligence reveals.

The Jewelers of America 18th annual Affiliate Design Competition includes four categories, the first of which - for pieces made from less than $1,000 of material - was won by the creator of the white gold gentleman's ring, Steven Kistner.

The ring consists of 12 trapezoidal pieces. Nine of these move and are inlayed with a combination of black onyx and 0.44ct worth of diamonds.

According to the website, gold was also featured in the second category, which is reserved for items of jewellery created from material costing between $1,001 and $3,000.

Joel Wiland's entry was a white gold omega chain holding a large blue topaz pendant. Category three, for pieces made for $3,001 and up, was a necklace and earrings that used 18ct white gold and 600 pave-set diamonds as well as 11 freshwater pearls.

In related news, the 6th Dubai City of Gold Conference is set to take place next month and it has emerged that one of the topics up for discussion will be the current price of gold.
