Gold coins are to feature in a new numismatics gallery showcasing an "exhaustive" collection of historical coinage, according to reports.

Newspaper the Siasat Daily says the collection, which will be housed in the new gallery at the Andhra Pradesh State Museum in Hyderabad, India, includes coins dating from the Romans, the Vijayanagara Kingdom and the Mughal Empire among others.

It also includes coins issued by the East India Company and currency of the British Empire.

Among the gold pieces are 20,000 gold ashrafi coins, named after Afhgan leader Shah Ashraf Hotak, who realafghan.com reports conquered the Persian Empire.

The gallery is expected to open before the end of 2008, with the museum's assistant director telling the newspaper that work is "proceeding smoothly" on preparations such as cataloguing, documentation, translation and preparation of literature, selection and showcasing.

Once open, the State Museum will become only the third institute in India to have a dedicated numismatic gallery, the others being the National Museum in Delhi and the Reserve Bank of India in the country's largest city, Mumbai.
