Gold coins commemorate Israel's 60th anniversaryTuesday, 20th May 2008 (1231 views) A 22ct gold proof coin is part of a new collection launched by the Bank of Israel to mark the 60th anniversary of the country's foundation, according to reports.Numismaster.com says the coin was designed by graphics artist Ruben Nutels as a representation of Israel's hopes for peace and prosperity in the future. The 30mm diameter coin features the figure 60, the zero of which is formed by the shape of a pomegranate, inside of which is a dove of peace. Pomegranate is grown in Israel and is considered a symbol of prosperity in the country. A maximum of 444 of the coins will be minted and will cost $1,039 (£156.47). Along with two other coins, it can also be bought in a set for £1,180, the site adds. Israel celebrated the official anniversary of its existence as a modern state on May 8th with fireworks, concerts and a national holiday, the BBC reports. The country was founded as an independent state on May 14th, 1948.
