Australian television and radio presenter Patti Newton has reportedly expressed her gratitude to the country's police force and media after jewellery taken during the alleged theft of her handbag at a shopping centre was returned.

Ms Newton, who has appeared on Good Morning Australia as well as the country's versions of Deal Or No Deal and Dancing With The Stars, told reporters she was "thrilled to bits" that two gold bracelets encrusted with diamonds had been returned to her, theage.com stated.

The news site says that according to a police charge sheet, other items in Ms Newton's Guccci handbag when it was taken included an 18ct gold chain, three gold bangles, four gold rings, two pairs of earrings and a set of rosary beads that had belonged to her mother.

There was also a Gucci wallet, a smaller Gucci bag, a purse, diary and pen designed by Louis Vuitton, and over A$2,300 (£1,118) in cash.

A spokesman for Victoria police told the site that officers are hopeful of recovering more of the jewellery.

Two people have been charged with the theft of Ms Newton's bag.
