Ancient gold is part of a new exhibition of Greek artefacts at the Canadian Museum of Civilisation.

Spanning hundreds of years of history, the exhibition contains gold jewellery, vases, sculptures and textiles, religious objects plus a collection of 19th-century paintings idealising Greek culture and the fight for independence.

All the artefacts in this exhibition have been lent by the Benaki Museum in Athens, a private family-owned museum.

While the exhibition is called The Greeks, the name denotes a broader understanding of how far the Greek culture spread, as many of the pieces comes from neighbouring regions such as the modern Egypt, Turkey, Syria and other Mediterranean areas.

"Today, we define Greece as a state with definite borders," wrote the Ottowan Citizen.

"The [ancient] Greeks did not just export their culture, philosophy and technology. They were also influenced by the cultures of others."

As well as gold jewellery, the exhibition will feature a striped, wool tunic scientists believe was worn by a Mediterranean child about 1,200 years ago.

The museum is also currently showing an exhibition called Jamestown, Quebec, Santa Fe: Three North American Beginnings.
