A gold ring has been donated to the North Carolina Museum of Art, reports the Triangle Business Journal.

The gold ring is from fourth-century Greece and has been donated in honour of North Carolina's first lady, Mary Easley.

Friends of Greek Art presented the ring to the museum. It is an organisation that was created by the first lady in 2003.

The journal reports that since 2003, the Friends of Greek Art have raised over $400,000 for the classical art collection of the museum.

Ms Easley said: "By giving North Carolinians more Greek art to view and study, we are encouraging an appreciation of Greek culture and a better understanding of the role classical Greece has played in shaping who we are today."

Winged goddess Nike is reportedly depicted on the golden ring. She was the Greek goddess of victory.

Ms Easley is married to governor Mike Easley and is involved with the Carolina Ballet, North Carolina Symphony and the American Dance Festival in Durham
