Gold hunter survives 'by eating bugs'

Wednesday, 30th July 2008 (452 views)

A treasure hunter who was lost in the desert for five days managed to survive by eating termites and other insects.

Commenting on Theo Rosmulder's diet, Inspector Chris Cassidy from the Goldfields-Esperance District Office said there would have been a lot of bugs for him to eat while out in the wild.

He added: "I haven't tried them, I'm not a nutritionist, but they obviously sustained him for four days."

Mr Rosmulder disappeared last week after he went prospecting for gold with his wife and another couple.

Police concerns rose as it was known Mr Rosmulder had no food and only a metal detector and light clothing with him.

He was finally found by Aboriginal trackers who were involved in the search.

Police said Mr Rosmulder may have been found quicker if he had been able to light a fire.

The Telegraph said there are three gold mines in the area.
