The five most exotic Rolex watches bought in the US in the first quarter of 2008 have been announced by Melrose jewellers.

Among the watches were the Ladies' White Gold Rolex President and the Men's Rolex Cosmograph Datyona.

Scott Parham, head of market research at Melrose, said people wanted "more intricacy and specialisation", adding that there was demand of black and white Tahitian mother-of-pearl dials.

He also said that white gold Rolexes were among models that had become more popular than in recent years.

New Rolex products were displayed at the Baselword annual watch and jewellery show in Switzerland this summer.

The pieces are modified versions of existing timepieces, including the Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona, worn by actor Paul Newman in 1972.

Its new incarnation is made of 18-carat Everose gold, with a black dial and gold sub-dials.

Other new items include the Oyster Perpetual Datejust, Rolex Submariner and the Oyster Perpetual Sea Dweller.
