Sierra Gold has announced it will start gold production at its project on the Sewa River in Sierra Leone on August 22nd.

The company will use an eight-inch dredge which has the ability to process 50 tonnes per hour in its operations.

Preliminary testing at the site has already confirmed the presence of gold.

Doug Evans, chief executive officer of Sierra Gold, said: "This equipment will allow the company to move to another level of gold production."

He added that Sierra Gold was "excited" about taking the next step at the Sewa River and the fact the equipment will give the company the opportunity "to be able to mine throughout the year".

According to the press release from the gold mining company, the Birimian greenstone belt in west Africa - where the Sewa River is located - has had a long of history of gold prospecting and mining.

In June this year, Sierra Gold announced the river dredging equipment would be able to increase gold production by up to 500 per cent.
