An exhibition on ancient Minoan Crete currently being held in New York is drawing to a close, reports artdaily.org.

From the Land of the Labyrinth: Minoan Crete, 3000 to 1100 BC, has on show over 280 artefacts from the Minoan culture of Crete which was "the first palatial civilisation to establish itself on European soil".

Included in the exhibition are inscribed clay tablets, ceremonial vessels and items of gold jewellery which were discovered in the tombs of members of the culture's elite.

The artefacts have been divided up thematically into areas such as communications, religion, technology, social structure and bureaucratic organisation.

Each of the pieces on display at the Onassis Cultural Centre have been loaned from archaeological museums in Crete as part of a collaboration with the Hellenic ministry of culture.

The centre was opened in October 2000 by the Alexander S Onassis Public Benefit Foundation. The foundation aims to promote information on the Hellenic civilisation throughout North America.
