A woman in Boston has been presented with a 14-carat gold headed cane in celebration of her 101st birthday.

Amherst Bulletin said Gertrude Abrams is the oldest woman to have ever lived in Amherst.

The Boston Post Cane was presented to Ms Abrams following a tradition established in 1909 when the then publisher of the Boston Post gave out 700 of the golden canes to 700 towns in New England to be presented to the oldest living male citizen.

During the 1920s Ms Abrams worked at the Boston Post, typing up election results for the newspaper.

Ms Abrams was given the cane by town manager Larry Shaffer.

On the day of the presentation, Mr Shaffer said: "I asked Mrs. Abrams, how do you get to 101? And she said, you have to get to 100 first."

Meanwhile, another of the Boston Post Canes was recently discovered in Lexington after it had been lost in the 1970s, according to the Taunton Gazette.
