Exploration firm Scotgold Resources has appointed AMC Consultants to carry out a scoping study at the Cononish gold project in Scotland.

Scotgold stated that the move is an "important milestone" in moving towards the production stage of the programme.

The purpose of the study - which will commence at the end of September and is expected to take three months to complete - is to assess the economic viability of the project.

It will culminate in the firm producing a "comprehensive development strategy" for the site as well as nearby prospects.

Mining methods, equipment selection, infrastructure and environmental issues will all come under scrutiny during the appraisal.

Recently, it was revealed that the UK's largest gold mine - St David's in Snowdonia, Wales - is set to reopen due to rising demand.

Managing director of Clogau Gold Ben Roberts told the Western Mail: "We are in talks with the Crown Commission to discuss the possibility of opening the mine."
