A Canadian man has surprised a married Israeli politician with a gold ring and a proposal of marriage.

Laurent Belanger from Quebec had the gold ring couriered to Israeli foreign minister Tzipi Livni with a handwritten letter and a photograph of himself.

The unusual 18-c gold present was set with a diamond and was examined by security guards who were reportedly surprised to find the ring.

It was reportedly presented on a cushion in a tin box with a personal note reading "I am aware of what I'm doing".

Ms Livni, who is married with two children, has reportedly instructed her staff to return the gold ring to Mr Belanger and thank him for the gesture.

The note did not specifically ask Ms Livni, leader of Israel's Kadima party, for marriage but the gold and diamond ring has been perceived as a proposal.
