Gold jewellery retailers in Dubai are stocking up on items for the festive season and are predicting strong sales this year.

Despite the global economic slowdown, gold jewellers and wholesale merchants in the emirate claim that sales have been stable, Emirates Business reports.

Popular celebrations such as Eid, Christmas, New Year, the annual Dubai Shopping Festival and Valentine's Day are all expected to push up sales of gold jewellery in the United Arab Emirates.

Pankaj Chidadila, manager of SCG Jewellers, said: "We are now getting regular orders for Dubai Shopping Festival when consumers from around the world will be buying jewellery."

According to Mr Chidadila, many Arab customers like handmade Indian gold jewellery and bangles have been popular in recent months.

The Dubai Mall, which opened earlier this month, is home to hundreds of retailers, including a gold souk with 220 gold and jewellery outlets.
