Those who knew a gold jeweller in Santa Fe have paid their last respects to him.

Successful jeweller Paul Shaya, who owned Shaya Fine Jewellers, passed away at the age of 80 following a series of medical problems, the Santa Fe New Mexican reported.

He inherited the business from his Lebanese father Raymond Shaya, who established the jewellery store in 1951 and his wife Tila was a jewellery designer.

Born in Santa Fe in 1928, Paul Shaya focused on "gold jewelry and expensive watches" and was the first authorised Rolex dealer in New Mexico.

"The customer base evolved from Santa Fe to Albuquerque and then statewide," Robin Shaya, Paul's son, said. "Pretty soon we had customers across the country and in Europe."

Now run from home by Tila Shaya, the company specialises in gold Zia symbols and has a global customer base.

Despite the economic slowdown and rising gold prices, global demand for gold coins and gold jewellery sales, particularly in south-east Asia, have remained strong, according to the Telegraph.
