Gold researcher honoured for catalysis workThe news feeds on this site are independently provided by Adfero Limited © and do not represent the views or opinions of the World Gold Council. Tuesday, 30th December 2008 (1647 views) An academic has been selected as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) following her work on catalysis using precious metals.Maria Flytzani-Stephanopoulos of Tufts University's School of Engineering was given the honour after being nominated by her peers. Her research team has been working on creating catalysts using reduced amounts of precious metals such as gold to generate high-grade hydrogen to be used in fuel cells. The group was the first to show that catalysts prepared with atomic-level dispersions of gold in oxide supports have the highest activity in the water-gas shift reaction. Ms Flytzani-Stephanopoulos and her team are now looking at ways to improve the process by identifying which oxide structures bind gold more strongly. "There are always new things to discover in materials science which impact catalysis," she remarked. AAAS fellows are recognised for their "meritorious efforts to advance science or its applications".
