Goldplat has announced that it has commenced production at its Kilimapesa gold mine in Kenya.

The company has a 50 per cent stake in the gold project, which it owns as a joint venture with International Gold Exploration.

Production commencing at Kilimapesa marks the transition by Goldplat from a recovery firm to a gold producer and the firm predicted that the project would generate an operating profit in the second quarter of 2009.

A $500,000 (£355 million) refurbishment programme has been conducted at the mine's recovery plant and it is now producing gold, enhancing recovery rates and boosting Goldplat's operational performance.

Goldplat is conducting an underground development programme at Kilimapesa that extends the strike of the south vein, while development is also taking place to the north.

Listed on the AIM stock exchange, producer Goldplat has gold recovery businesses in South Africa and Ghana and is currently expanding into gold mining.
