The Queen of Spain has received an 18-c gold brooch in the shape of a dragonfly to mark an official visit to Jamaica.

Created by Jamaican designer Georgia Brown and master goldsmith Fred Lusan of Kingston-based Mahala Treasures, the brooch is distinctive and one of the highest quality pieces the jewellers have produced, the Jamaica Gleaner reported.

Queen Sofia wore the brooch to open a new wing of the Spanish Town Hospital in St Catherine and to unveil a commemorative plaque at the Sangster International Airport.

"The dragonfly represents the values promoted by Queen Sofía and is a replica of her lasting beauty," Ms Brown stated.

Rickie Francis and David Johnston of Mahala Treasures, who offered the gift to the queen, told the newspaper that the brooch took two months to design and make.

Meanwhile, jeweller Corbet Davis told the Pensacola News Journal recently that his staff have been working on gifts to present to the Spanish king and queen during a royal visit, including gold necklaces featuring replica Spanish coins that could be worn "during ceremonies or any time".
