Prague is to host approximately 1,000 nanotechnology experts at the EuroNano Forum 2009 in May, it has been announced.

The Technological Centre of the Czech Academy of Sciences is to hold the event, which will feature scientists from around the world discussing uses of the technology, the Czech News Agency reports.

An overview of the current state of the nanotechnology industry, which often involves the use of gold, will take place at the forum, along with discussions focusing on its use in areas such as the generation and storage of electric energy, medicine, electronics and water treatment.

Security, education, research and infrastructure will also be covered at EuroNano, along with presentations by firms involved in the sector.

Earlier this week it was announced that gold is being used in cancer research, with scientists at Northwestern University discovering that gold nanoparticles can be used to improve the ability of small interfering RNA molecules to detect cancer cells.
