A giant gold collectable coin is being sold by a company in the US for around $3.15 million (£2.2 million).

According to American Precious Metals Exchange, based in Edmond, Oklahoma, the 220lb coin is retailing at the value of the gold plus a five per cent markup and is the size of a manhole cover, the Oklahoman reported.

The coin is one of just five, the largest in the world, made by the Royal Canadian Mint in 2007.

Scott Thomas, president of the American Precious Metals Exchange, said: "I can't wait to meet the customer that purchases this coin from us."

Featuring Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse side, a maple leaf on the reverse and with a face value of CN$1 million (£560,000), the coin is being stored in Boston and will be delivered to its buyer by armoured car.

Meanwhile, Rand Refinery in South Africa has increased production of coins due to a rise in demand from investors, according to Bloomberg.
