Fishpool hoard of gold coins crowns new British Museum galleryThe news feeds on this site are independently provided by Adfero Limited © and do not represent the views or opinions of the World Gold Council. Wednesday, 25th March 2009 (2105 views) A hoard of 1,273 gold coins discovered at Fishpool in Nottinghamshire in 1966 forms a dramatic part of the newly-opened Medieval Europe Gallery at the British Museum in London. The striking pile of Medieval gold coins is suspected to be part of a fund raised by Margaret of Anjou to support her deposed husband King Henry VI during the War of the Roses, the Times reported. Other highlights of the new halls include the Royal Gold Cup, made in Paris circa 1370-80AD under the patronage of Jean duc de Berry. Open from March 25th 2009, the Paul and Jill Ruddock Gallery has been dedicated to the British Museum's collection of Medieval material (covering 1050-1500AD) and admission is free. Many of the objects in the new gallery have not been on public display for decades and a new book, Masterpieces of Medieval Art by curator James Robinson, has been published to accomplish its opening.
