A Renaissance revival 18-c gold amulet, dating from around 1880AD, has been sold at auction in Boston for $40,290 (£27,630).

Skinner auction house in Boston sold the gem-set brooch during a fine jewellery sale, which grossed almost $1.8 million, despite the current economic climate.

Many items in the auction sold for the higher end of their estimates and the sale was well attended.

A number of lots came from the family of William and Henry Walters, founders of the Waters Art Museum in Baltimore, including a Renaissance revival long chain (sold for $402,000) and an archaeological revival gold and glass bead fringe necklace (sold for $67,545.50).

Gloria Lieberman, Skinner's director of fine jewellery, explained: "Despite the current state of the economy, the high end of fine jewellery market is as strong as ever as buyers are confident that their investment is sound."

In other news, a new exhibition in Paris is showcasing the work of jewellery designers whose work became popular in the 1930s, including a number of gold pieces.
