Residents of New York are likely to become more involved in treasure hunting for lost gold artefacts this summer due to the increased value of the precious metal, it has been suggested.

President of the Empire State Metal Detector Association Bob Lundy stated that the city will be subject to "one hell of a gold rush" in the coming months, the Daily News reports.

"Treasure hunters will be combing the beaches looking for valuables like never before. Gold is skyrocketing in value," he stated.

One area of the city where treasure hunters may consider investigating is Prospect Park, according to one expert.

Author of The Urban Treasure Hunter Michael Chaplan stated that this area of New York "is a great spot for war buffs".

He noted that soldiers fighting in the Battle of Long Island hid their treasured belongings in the park, with many never returning to collect them.

Last week, an auction in Boston sold an 18-c gold amulet dating back to 1880 for over $40,000 (£28,000).
