Olympic medallist Rebecca Adlington has unveiled a new gold coin to mark the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The swimmer has launched the coin as part of a series of collector's edition pieces being minted in the lead up to the event.

Featuring the Olympic rings in full colour, the £5 gold coin also depicts images of swimmers in the centre and the Olympic stadium as viewed from above in the border design.

Ms Adlington, a double gold medal winner at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, stated: "This coin is a great way for the British public to show its support for the sportsmen and women who are already preparing for this ultimate sporting challenge."

Three years from the London games, the Royal Mint has started to launch a new series of coins to mark the countdown to the event, with one released each year until 2012.

Costing £1,295 each, a total of 4,000 gold proof coins featuring the Olympic swimming design will be minted.

Meanwhile, Romania's national bank recently unveiled a new gold coin to mark the 170th anniversary of King Carol I, according to Financiarul.
