Monday, 27th April 2009 (1632 views) The Alaska Mint has created a new solid gold commemorative coin to mark Lance Mackey winning his third consecutive Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.One side of the coin features the racer hugging two of his sled dogs, while the other marks his wins in the 1,150-mile race between 2007-09 and his record pace of nine days, 21 hours, 38 minutes, 46 seconds. A total of 37 gold medallions have been produced priced at $1,750 (£1,196) each and money from the sale of each coin will be donated to 'Mackey's Comeback Kennel'. The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race takes place each year between Anchorage and Nome across extreme terrain, including mountains, frozen rivers, tundra, dense forests and coastline. In related news, Olympic medallist Rebecca Adlington has unveiled a new gold coin to mark the London 2012 Games as part of a series of collectors' edition pieces being produced by the UK Mint.
