Wisconsin's state treasurer has launched an auction on the internet of over $2,000 (£1,357) worth of collectible coins and currency.

The eBay sale includes abandoned gold bullion and coins handed to the Wisconsin State Treasurer's Office from bank and financial institution safe deposit boxes that have been abandoned for at least five years.

Dawn Marie Sass commented: "The exciting part of the auction is the potential for the forgotten item to have a second chance at life and either expand an existing collector's set or hopefully help those wanting to start a collection."

Before items are auctioned off, the names of owners are published in newspapers and entered into the Wisconsin Unclaimed Property online database, while the contents of safe deposit boxes are stored in the state's vault for three further years.

Proceeds of auctions are held for owners for a period of time and the eBay auction finishes on May 5th 2009.

In other news, gold dealer Rare Coin Wholesalers recently appointed 2008 Libertarian party vice presidential nominee and economics expert Wayne Allyn Root as its national spokesman and chief economic and political strategist.
