Bidders paid thousands of dollars for "bold" gold jewellery items during a sale held by Bonhams in New York.

Lots sold during the fine jewellery auction included items by leading designers such as Van Cleef & Arpels and Oscar Heyman.

The auction house noted that a trend for "large gold pieces" emerged during the sale, in particular bracelets signed by Verdura and Tiffany & Co.

Held at the Bonhams New York galleries, gold highlights of the sale on April 20th 2009 were an 18-c gold bangle bracelet by M Buccellati, which sold for $19,520 (£13,164) and a suite of 18-c gold jewellery comprising a necklace, bangle and earclips.

Virginia Salem, Bonhams New York's director of jewellery, commented: "What we are clearly seeing is a demand for clean, bold wearable designs. This shows that with the many changes in the market, people aren't looking for pieces to simply be forgotten in vaults."

Meanwhile, fine gold items from designers such as Shaun Leane, Amanda Brighton and Assya will be on display during Coutts London Jewellery Week in June this year.
