A number of gold items from ancient Afghanistan will go on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York this summer.

The show, which runs from June 23rd to September 20th in the Iris and B Gerald Cantor Exhibition Hall, includes jewellery, Bronze Age vessels and ornaments made from the precious metal.

Entitled Afghanistan: Hidden Treasures from the National Museum, Kabul, the travelling exhibition will celebrate the role of the country as a crossroads for major trade routes and feature objects from four archaeological sites.

Thomas Campbell, director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, said: "As we look at these fragile and delicately wrought works of art, we cannot help but be amazed at their survival from antiquity to the present time."

All items in the display are owned by the National Museum of Afghanistan in Kabul and cover the Bronze Age to the Kushan period of the nation's history.

Meanwhile, ancient gold jewellery discovered by archaeologists in a mound near the town of Simeonovgrad in Bulgaria has been placed on display at the Museum of Thracian Art in Haskoyo.
