A new gold museum has opened in Zhao Yuan in China's Shandong Province.

The facility, the first of its kind to be dedicated to the precious metal in the world's most populous country, demonstrates the mining and smelting processes, as well as documenting the technology used in gold production, People's Daily Online reports.

Approximately 163 million yuan (£15.03 million) was spent on the building and its exhibits, which are housed in 13 halls spread over two floors.

The concept behind the museum was "participation, interaction, experiential and scenario-based", a mantra which its operators have attempted to follow through the use of sophisticated light, sound and animation technology.

According to the news source, the efforts have appeared to work, with exhibitions said to offer visitors knowledge and entertainment.

Zhao Yuan is not the only place where people can see gold displays this year. Alaska's Anchorage Museum is running a special exhibit dedicated to the precious metal between May 30th and August 2nd.
