Large quantities of gold coins are expected to be uncovered as excavation of a ship wrecked off the coast of Anglesey gets underway.

The vessel is thought to have been sent by the King of France to aid Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1746 and an attempt is now being made to recover its contents.

Supplies and gold were sent by the king after the Jacobite Rebellion, but the eventual fate of the ships has puzzled historians.

However, a rare seal matching that of a ring worn by Mary Queen of Scots has been found and divers now believe they have discovered the wreckage, with a large hoard of gold coins expected to be uncovered.

Diver Joe McCormack told Click Liverpool: "This was a fantastic quantity of gold - many tonnes - which as bullion alone would be worth millions at today's values."

Last week, Numismatic News noted that a gold coin dating back to 1856 is set to go up for auction in California.
