Gold dating from the 16th century is being discovered in the hills of Scotland, with sizeable chunks uncovered in some cases.

Examples of the precious metal have included rare nuggets, while goldpanners are finding large amounts of smaller gold flecks in rivers, the Times reports.

According to the news source, the Scottish gold was used by King James V and his queen and is some of the rarest in the world.

Those hoping to find some for themselves can do so when rainfall causes it to be worked free.

Prospector Vince Thurkettle explained: "Really heavy rain can send a whole riverbed into motion, crushing and freeing the gold."

Earlier this week, the Press and Journal noted that a number of gold items have been uncovered in the Scottish area of Moray.

These include an earring believed to be Roman, as well as a pair of gold rings - thought to date from the fifth and 12th centuries.
