Demand for gold panning courses in the UK has trebled over the last year, according to a prospector.

Vince Thurkettle told the Daily Mail that a growing number of people are seeking to learn how to uncover the precious metal in rivers.

He explained that up until around 12 months ago, Britons were largely unaware that gold could be found on their own shores, despite gold rushes having taken place in the past.

But according to Mr Thurkettle, that is now changing. "Suddenly there is a renewed interest in gold panning again and anyone who has been vaguely interested in prospecting feels now is the time to give it a go," he was quoted as saying.

And although most recognise that they are unlikely to make their fortune through the practice, the recession is prompting many to try their luck in the hope of uncovering something valuable.

Meanwhile, the Times has noted that gold nuggets are currently being uncovered in the Scottish hills.
