Tennis star Maria Sharapova is to sport gold jewellery at tournaments under a new deal.

The Russian will be provided with pieces by Tiffany & Co at her next eight Grand Slam events, having recently returned to the sport after a lengthy absence.

She is currently taking part in the French Open and is wearing a pair of 18-c yellow gold Elsa Peretti Wave earrings said to be worth $1,150 (£712) during her matches.

The former world number one said she is "thrilled" to have the items and Tiffany's Linda Buckley welcomed the partnership.

"Maria Sharapova is a longtime friend of Tiffany and a champion on and off the court," she said, adding that the earrings "epitomise both the quality of her championship play and Tiffany's reputation for design excellence".

Meanwhile, a gold watch that was retailed by Tiffany and is being put up for auction by Bonhams next month has been described as one of the greatest ever made.
