Shock at value of gold coin hoardThe news feeds on this site are independently provided by Adfero Limited © and do not represent the views or opinions of the World Gold Council. Friday, 29th May 2009 (832 views) Gold coins thought to be around 400 years old are expected to fetch £50,000 at auction.A total of 57 pieces will be on sale in London, having been uncovered at a building site 30 years ago. The builder that came across them gave them to his grandson, then aged ten, who put them away until he came to need money for his wedding. Having had them valued by specialist James Morton of Morton & Eden he said he was "gobsmacked" to learn their worth. Mr Morton stated: "The remarkable thing about this collection is that each coin is different. Each has different mint marks and styles." It is thought that the coins were minted during the reign of James I and they will be auctioned individually on June 9th and 10th. Meanwhile, an 18-c gold watch that was owned by former president of Argentina Isabel Peron is to go on sale at a separate London auction on June 10th.
