An opportunity to learn about the production of gold coins is being offered in Canada.

The Royal Canadian Mint has announced that it will be holding free tours of its facilities later this week.

On July 1st, visitors will be invited to the Winnipeg Mint, which was established in 1976.

Events are being staged to mark Canada Day and in addition to the tour - which will provide an insight into coin production - family activities and entertainment will be taking place.

The Royal Canadian Mint has been producing gold coins for 101 years, having originally been founded in Ottawa, where facilities still exist.

Earlier this month, Pobjoy Mint announced the creation of new gold coins designed to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin.

The pieces are to be used on the Falkland Islands and the reverse bears a classic portrait of the naturalist, while the obverse features Queen Elizabeth II.
