Gold jewellery was among the items received by George Bush and members of his administration during the former US president's time in office, it has been revealed.

The State Department has published a list of gifts from foreign dignitaries, with Libya's Colonel Gaddafi among those featuring prominently.

According to the Independent newspaper in the UK, former secretary of state Condoleezza Rice received a number of high-value pieces.

These included a gold locket from Colonel Gaddafi, which featured an image of his face.

Presents made from the precious metal were also given to President Bush, while other gifts included wine and cigars.

Current US president Barack Obama was recently given a gold necklace on his first trip to Saudi Arabia.

Known as the King Abdul Aziz Order of Merit, the item represents the highest honour that the country can bestow and was a gift from King Abdullah, who said that it is given to "very few" people.
