Friday, 24th July 2009 (945 views) An antique gold idol, whose value is enhanced further by its age, has been stolen from the Lord Kalaseshwara temple in Kalasa, reports Daijiworld. The idol was found to be missing on Thursday morning when a priest arrived to open the temple for the day's events. At 1,465 years old, the idol is said to be particularly prized due to its age and its origin as a gift from the kings of Keladi. With other gold ornaments taken in the incident, the total value of precious items stolen is estimated at ten lac rupees (£126,400). The theft was achieved by removing bolts from the temple's doors, while an unsuccessful attempt was also made to remove the temple's Kalasha. Meanwhile, the Sri Venkateswara Temple in Andhra Pradesh has received a substantial amount of gold in donations. The Times of India reports that 11 tonnes of gold have been donated to the idol of Lord Venkateswara to date.
