Visitors to the Colorado Rockies this summer have the opportunity to tour an authentic gold mine and try their hand at panning for the yellow metal.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that a new Epic Summer tourism package has been compiled to feature the best of the American Rocky Mountains during a four or seven-day adventure.

Experienced local guides will lead visitors through a range of activities during their stay in Colorado. In addition to panning for gold and touring the mine, visitors will experience a historic walking tour of Breckenridge, a Victorian mining town which is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year.

According to the Breckenridge Overview, the town was founded by gold prospectors in 1859 during the height of the Pikes Peak Gold Rush, which lasted until the early 1860s. Gold dredging boats saw a mining resurgence at the turn of the 20th century, when the precious metal was discovered in its riverbed.

Breckenridge is located 86 miles west of Denver and is a popular ski destination during the winter months.
