Lihir Gold has announced record gold output for the first half of this year.

The Australian firm said today (July 30th) that it had produced 612,000 ounces of the precious metal in the first six months of 2009, up from 566,000 in the previous half-year.

Gold output totalled 294,000 ounces in the three months to June, the third highest quarterly total for Lihir Gold to date.

The company said that the figures indicate it is well positioned to meet its yearly production target of between one million and 1.2 million ounces of gold.

Arthur Hood, managing director of Lihir Gold, explained that the company's acquisition of Equigold last year had proved to be an "excellent" one, as it brought "immediate increases in production as well as exciting growth opportunities in Cote d'Ivoire".

Lihir Gold completed its merger with Equigold in June 2008 after first announcing the acquisition in March that year.
