The US Mint has sold almost three-quarters of a million American Eagle gold bullion coins so far in 2009, according to the latest figures.

In the week to July 29th, the mint sold 17,000 American Eagles, taking its total for the month to 77,000, Coin News reports.

Since the start of the year, collectors and investors have bought 747,500 American Eagles.

The coin, which was launched in 1986, features the Liberty design originally produced by Irish-born sculptor August Saint-Gaudens for the 1907 $20 gold piece.

In 2006, the mint introduced uncirculated versions of the gold coin for collectors.

Elsewhere, demand for the Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coin held steady last week, with sales of 865 units, compared to 868 the week before.

Coin News said sales are expected to increase over the coming months, since the US Mint has upped the limit on purchases of the coins from one per household to ten.

The 24-c gold piece also features the 1907 Saint-Gaudens Liberty design, with a depiction of an eagle on the reverse.
