Thursday, 30th July 2009 (822 views) A witness to a police chase across a busy highway has recovered a stolen gold engagement ring worth $7,100 (£4,305) using a metal detector. The ring was allegedly snatched by a man from a jewellery store clerk in Newington, New Hampshire, Seacoast Online reports. After fleeing the shop, he ran across a car park, up a hill and then crossed four lanes of a nearby highway with a police officer in pursuit. He was arrested after running for approximately one mile. A bystander who saw some of the chase followed the suspect and the officer to the site of the arrest. He was familiar with the route of the pursuit and after reading that the stolen ring had not been recovered, offered to help local police with its recovery. Police chief Jon Tretter said the witness arrived with a metal detector and "within 15 minutes or so", he had found the gold ring with its store tags still attached. The ring was returned to the jewellery store, which verified that it was the same piece stolen the day before. Newington is located around 45 miles west of New Hampshire's state capital, Concord.
