A number of gold jewellery pieces designed by US sculptor Alexander Calder have gone on display at a museum in San Diego, California.

Born in 1898, the artist first starting making jewellery at the age of eight, when he came up with items designed for his sister's doll. He went on to become renowned for his use of wire to create 3D sculptures and died in 1976.

Visitors to the Calder Jewellery exhibition at the San Diego Museum of Art will be able to view a spiral gold engagement ring that the sculptor made for his bride-to-be, Louisa James, who he met in 1929, the Union-Tribune reports.

Another gold item on display at the museum is a brooch - again made for Calder's wife for her 53rd birthday - shaped like a spiral that ends in a serpent-like style.

Calder also created several large sculptures that were displayed in cities around the world including New York, Paris, Montreal, Mexico City and Chicago.
