Friday, 23rd October 2009 (2960 views) A "one-of-a-kind" gold ring has been recovered from the wreck of a Spanish galleon that sank of the coast of Florida in September 1622, according to reports.Examiner states that the ring, which bears a deep purple amethyst stone, was discovered by scuba divers working with renowned treasure hunter Mel Fisher, who has been studying the wreck of the Nuestra Senora de Atocha for a number of years. The Atocha sank en route to Havana, Cuba during a violent hurricane over 380 years ago. Family and crew member Kim Fisher told the site that the gold band is unlike any of the artefacts previously recovered from the ship. "We have found several other rings with similar characteristics without stones in them, or with emeralds, but this is the first ring with an amethyst found on the Atocha site," she said. The Fisher family continue to search for the rear section of the Atocha, which is thought to hold the ship's most precious artefacts and jewellery.
